Jonathan Libman

Jonathan Libman is a multi-ethnic writer and director born and raised near Penn Station in New York City.  He went through the public school system and was lucky to cross paths and learn from such a wide variety of people day in and day out.

I am usually interested in stories and characters who get overlooked, marginalized, or worse.  I will never ignore or deprive characters of their essence and language because that is their and my lifeblood.
Their stories should exist on stage because they sure as &#!% exist off stage.  And a good artist allows the characters to surprise, be impulsive, exhibit strength and weakness.
If you lean into the discomfort with your eyes open,
somewhere right along side it,
there is great beauty.
These stories and characters linger with us - with me anyway.
Thanks to Mom and Dad for showing how to truly exhibit courage humor and humanity in the face of great adversity.

Jonathan’s work has been performed at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, New Dramatists, The Actors Studio, Provincetown Playhouse, Cherry Lane, The Wild Project, Theatre 80, The Medicine Show, and The Slipper Room.

Jonathan's full length plays include:

Accidents Waiting to Happen

(Rattlestick Theater, IRT Theater, Kitchen Dog Theater Finalist),

Please Leave the Light On

(Bay Area Playwright's Semi-Finalist, Seven Devils Playwriting Conference Finalist),

An excerpt of his full length play Please Leave the Light On was presented in Barefoot Theatre Company’s ROCKAWAY, a collection of plays to benefit Hurricane Sandy Victims.  It was presented alongside some of New York’s City’s best playwrights including Stephen Adly Guirgis, Jose Rivera, Lyle Kessler, Jesse Eisenberg, and many more.
